What is the Difference between Coaching and Counselling?

A Coach and a Counsellor share a lot of the same approaches in regards to the skills of empathy, questioning, listening, reflection, and challenging, but it is the intention behind them that is very different. Most important, in Coaching, unlike Counselling, you are not looking at processing emotional wounds from the past. Counselling focuses on the past whilst Coaching focuses on the present and the future.

Life Coaching can still help one to heal but only through the process of moving them forward; helping them to identify and remove obstacles; building their self-esteem; and by helping them to formulate a crystal-clear action plan.

It is important to acknowledge that there are certain areas that are inappropriate for Life Coaching, such as mental or physical abuse, alcohol and drug dependency, and deep-seated emotional trauma. These are subjects best dealt with by a professional Counsellor or qualified therapist. It is however, not the Life Coach’s job to recommend a specific therapy to prospective Clients, but rather to give them an overview of what exists and to let them make their choice.
